Want to know one of the major causes for the United States budget deficit? Take a quick look at military spending over the past few years. In 2011, the U.S. spent over $700 billion for military expenses. That number is shocking, considering the immense debt in which the U.S. currently finds itself. You might be surprised to find out that a majority of the funds are actually used to support military personnel, as opposed to actual military equipment. Over $20 billion is used for various wars every year by the U.S. military. Knowing these facts, maybe you will now decide to vote differently in upcoming elections. Perhaps you would rather see funds go to improvement of education for young children and college students, as opposed to foreign wars. Maybe you would rather see the $350 million spent on weight loss surgeries for military family members go to domestic violence shelters for women. Whatever it is you want, be sure to understand these statistics first!
