Safest Methods To Transfer Large Files

What is the best way to send a large file to your colleague or a client? Emails allow you sending up to 6MB, but what should you do when you have a larger file? Not only you want to send a large file, but also you want to be sure that your data is safe and secured. There are several options for online file sharing:

First of all, if you don’t want to spend money on paid-for-storage services, you can still use your email. You can split your big file into several smaller ones through WinRAR or WinZip software. Then you can send these files in several parts. This approach might work well if you’re sending files to your colleague or a partner, but it is not acceptable to send such files to your customer. Emails were not designed for sharing large files; therefore, it is not the best business solution for you.

You can also use your own server to upload files; however, not everyone is familiar with FTP (file transfer protocol). In this case you would need to explain how to use FTP, and it might be a bit tricky.

Use Cloud Storage Services:

Cloud services might solve a lot of issues; they are easy to use and widely accessible. Services like Dropbox, Microsoft’s SkyDrive, Google Drive or Amazon’s Cloud Drive offer a free storage space for new customers. These websites have detailed explanations of how to use their services, so that there will be no confusion. You can share files by simply sending a link, the receiver has to install the software first and then download the file. SkyDrive allows you to even share files through Twitter and Facebook. You can synchronize and back up files on your devices through Dropbox. You can use all the mentioned services for free as a new customer; you can try them and decide which one is perfect for you.

Send one-to-one files:

Online services like YouSendIt, SendGenie or WeTransfer offer a cheap way of transferring data online. All you need to do is to upload a file online and share the link with recipients. These websites are great for small scale businesses.

Cyberlockers like MegaUpload, RapidShare or Hotfile allow you to share files by simply uploading them and sending a link. Only a person who has the link can access the files. You don’t need to install any software to use cyberlockers. All you need is to archive a file though WinRar or WinZip, create a password for protection, upload the file and send a link. Some people use cyberlockers to illegally share copyright materials. Their actions caused some problems followed by an arrest of the MegaUpload founder. Nonetheless, cyberlockers are popular as never before. Even if one website will be shut down, plenty of others would appear.

Business Solutions:

If you’re looking for something more business oriented you should consider using Google Apps for Bussiness, Zoho or Microsoft Office 365. If you are already familiar with Microsoft Office products then Office 365 would be perfect for you, even though it is a bit costly. Zoho is a cheaper alternative that is compatible with various Google Apps and Microsoft Office. However, if you use Microsoft Outlook then Zoho would not be optimal for you as it works only with Zoho mail service.

There are a lot of options on the market. All you need to do is try them and decide what’s best for you. Depending on the scale of your business and your purposes you could choose an optimal solution.
