With the holidays coming, many young professionals want nothing more than a job they love. While this is a dream for most, the holidays often pass by with family and friends and the things that are truly important in life. And then it hits—the holidays are over and you’re back to being an intern or being that graduate looking to break into your industry. In other words, it’s OK to have a wish list this holiday season, and it’s OK that this wish list be centered around work.
Below are not only a few different things that should be on a holiday wish list for every young professional, but how to actually make these things come true!
All I Want for Christmas is…
- A Blog. If you don’t want a blog, you should. Having a blog takes a lot of work, but it will prove to employers that you really understand your industry. It’s a great way to connect with others and talk about the issues at hand. If you already have a blog, wish this holiday season that Google will really notice. Download this plugin (for Firefox, or Google one for your browser) and check the PR of your blog. If it’s a 3, wish for a 5.
Coming True: Creating a blog is actually a lot of fun, it’s just getting started that can be overwhelming. Consider first finding a hosting company that you like (I use iPage and am very happy) for just a few dollars per month. Download WordPress, and it is usually pretty self-explanatory from there. Working to improve the PR of your website is a bit tougher and more complicated, but it can happen with just a little bit of SEO knowledge or hiring someone to help. - Get Into 250 More Google+ Circles. This should be a goal for young professionals because Google+ is such a great place to make connections in the industry. Even if people can’t find your blog or website on Google, they can likely find it through Google+ if you’re sharing your content. Furthermore, Google+ is something you can get involved with even if you don’t have a blog because you can share the content of others. This proves that you’re active in the industry and serious about your work.
Coming True: The best way to earn yourself a spot in more Google+ circles is by sharing the content of others that you read online. Share the content and then +1 that person and put him/her in your circles. The person will get a notification and very likely add you back. It takes a bit of time, but it’s worth it in the long run.
- Resume Critique. Every young professional should make sure they have a top-notch resume or CV. You have all of the information you need to work with; it is just about the way you write it and the format in which you present it. Believe it or not, this can be a bit tricky and so it’s something that many are still lacking.
Coming True: Making this wish come true is as easy as working with a recruiting agency or career center at your college or University. You may have to pay a bit of money, but it’s well worth it to have someone critique your resume. These people have seen many different resumes and know what employers want, and this could make all the difference for your job hunt in 2013.
- A few more LinkedIn views. It’s not secret that this is the social network for professionals, so a few more LinkedIn views is an obvious wish list must-have.
Coming True: The best way to make this wish come true is to continue to try and make connections with those in your industry. Every single time you apply for a job, go to LinkedIn and find the boss or the company and try to connect. People will appreciate your persistence. LinkedIn is also a great place to look for jobs, and employers will be able to see that you’re looking at their company’s profile, so you could form a connection that way.
