Google’s New Disavow Tool: Why You Should Use It Wisely

When to Disavow Links
If you inadvertently set up your link request file incorrectly or choose to devalue links that actually add value to your website’s search engine rankings, you could find that your site declines in the search results rankings. If, for example, you opt to disavow links by domain as opposed to by individual bad backlinks, you could potentially eliminate all the benefits that the Disavow Links tool offers. Disavow Links should only be used in the event of you falling victim to negative SEO attacks or when any existing bad backlinks cannot be removed through making direct contact with the referring webmasters. Determining whether your site has been subjected to a negative SEO attack or an SEO algorithm change can be difficult. However, indications that your site has been hit by an algorithm change include a decrease in your search engine rankings coupled with a known change in the SEO algorithms used. If, for instance, your site was hit by a decrease in web traffic around the time of the Penguin 3.0 update being rolled out, it is unlikely that your site has been the subject of a negative SEO attack.
