Asus VivoBook S400 Ultrabook Review

Asus VivoBook S400 Ultrabook Review

Over the past couple of years or so. ASUS has often been the frontrunner whenever a new tech is in place, be it in PC, notebook or even the tablet space. With the launch of Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system, the Taiwanese tech giants have wasted no time in jumping on the bandwagon with the new ASUS Vivobook S400 Ultrabook.

The  VivoBook S400 is the larger of two Vivobook models, the other being the Vivobook S200. The S400 features a 14-inch display in a resolution of 1366×768, which is slightly disappointing to say the least, as we have seen 14-inch display with a Full HD resolution before.

As far as ports go, the S400 features two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, one VGA and HDMI port, a LAN port and an SD card slot. It is powered by Intel’s 3rd Generation Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM, making relatively powerful notebook.

Windows 8 is an operating system that is made optimally for touchscreen devices, and the Vivobook S400 does not disappoint in this aspect as the capacitive display works like a charm. The movements of the Metro start menu was like butter and apps open almost instantly when the icons were touched.

If there is one thing to grip about the display, we are slightly disappointed that the hinge won’t allow us to pull the display flat on to the table surface, which would have been great for content sharing considering the multitouch capabilities of the display.

While we were happy with the touch displays performance, the keyboard, we felt could have been better. The key travel was a bit too shallow for our liking ,and it would have been great if it was backlit too, making it easier to type in the dark.

Marketed as one , the Vivobook S400 features the 2-second wake up time that is the hallmark of the Ultrabooks since its inception. This is made possible thanks to the 500GB hybrid drive which combines the speed of the SSD and storage capacity of the HDD.
