How tech savvy are you when it comes to computers? Unless you play about with one all the time there is not much chance of you being an expert. Luckily you don’t need to be, but there are still some things you should be able to do on your own. You can’t just expect to run out and ask someone for help every time you need to do something. Let’s look at a few of them and if you learn each one you should feel a lot more confident when you switch the computer on.
Backup your files
Do you know what you would do if you tried to switch on your computer one day and nothing happened? You might scream if you realized that all of your important data might be gone forever. You can’t take that chance because there are some things that can’t be replaced. Photographs of your children growing up are at stake, so learn how to back up your files on an external hard drive.
Stop hackers and viruses
Some people love causing harm to others and they might try and hack into your system. There are other people that create viruses that cause havoc. You need to stop both of these things from ever happening because it can cause you a lot of pain. Make sure you know how to set up a firewall and you need to learn how to install antivirus software to keep your computer healthy.
Learn some shortcuts
When you’re playing around on the computer it can take you a while to do certain things. Did you know that there are shortcuts you can learn in order to do things much quicker? Once you know how to use them properly you don’t need to drag your mouse everywhere. Try to learn a few each day and after a while you will become an expert at using them.
Access files from anywhere
Set up an account with a cloud storage service and it means you can locate your important files no matter where you are. If you are at your friend’s house you can log into your account and show them photos. If you are at the library and you want to access a document to find some information it’s easy. The most popular one at the moment is Dropbox and it’s free.
If it gets stolen
You need to plan for the worst and that would mean your computer getting stolen. It’s not likely to happen, but people do break into homes and take anything they think is worth money. Tracking software can help you locate your stolen machine and you just need to install some software to set it up. Not only is there a chance you can get it back, but someone could also be caught.
A newbie mistake is using the same password for everything. If someone manages to crack one of them it means they have access to everything. This is dangerous because they could do some real damage. The only solution is to use complex passwords for everything. This will obviously be a lot more work for you and that is why you should install password management software.
Remove old software
You don’t want to save too many things on your computer because it will eventually run out of space. If you can remove old software it means you free some of it up again. It’s not hard to delete anything you don’t use anymore, but only once you practice doing it a few times. While you’re at it you can also learn how to update your software because it will fix bugs and security issues.
